Gorilla Trekking –Bwindi Impenetrable National park

This is ultimate activity done by the tourist in different trekking regions within Bwindi Impenetrable National Park which are Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga and Nkuringo trekking sector. Visitors are advised to book their trekking permits before their time of arrive in the country, booking directly from the reservations office at Uganda Wildlife Authority ‘’UWA’’ Headquarters or through a trust worthy tour agent with a registered tour company. Payments for Gorilla permits can be done for up to two years in advance.

Note, only 8 people are allowed to visit the gorilla family for trek and one hour is being given to that particular group of people to watch their amazing way of life. Participates must be 15 years and above in order to engage in this thrilling life time changing experience and you will be accompanied by park range while trekking mountain gorillas.

Gorilla trekking experience is unpredictable which can take 2 to 8hours, depending on their previous location and once you locate them one hour will be given to you as you watch them playing, feeding as well as taking memorable photograph.

Below is the list of six main nature trails in Buhoma for those who wish to come up with real adventure of Bwindi Impenetrable forest;

Munyanga Waterfall Walk

This forest trails starts right from Buhoma along the River Ivi-Nkuringo tail and continues in the sensational sight of the falls, bird life and the cool breezing air is rewarding.

Muzabajirro Loop

The Muzabajirro Loop is a 6kilomters walk around a hill you will be led by the UWA guide who will take you through   this trail and come up will great sights of primates, birds and a gainful view of the Virungas.

The Ivi River Walk

This raises 14 Kilometers and takes around seven hours to access it while using a trail pass in a place known as Mukempunu which means ‘’ a place of pigs’’ where wild pigs can be encountered.

The Buhoma-Nkuringo Trail

The Buhoma trail can take three or four hour, crossing right through the park and adjoining the two villages and offering spectacular views of the misty hillsides as you ascend the hills towards Nkuringo or else it leds you to Ivi River Walk for more rewardable views.

The Habinyanja Trail

This trail attracts a lot through offering many species but it takes 4 to 6 hours to access it in both ascending and descending. The trail takes you in a stunning ascent of the Habigorogoro and Riyovi Ridge where you will be able to see Buhoma River. You will still enjoy great relaxation on the gentle slope to the mighty Habinyanja swamp and the trails are rewarding with sights of birds like Pel’s Fishing Owl, African Black Duck and Black Bee Eaters.

Bird Watching in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

Bwindi Impenetrable forest is Uganda’s oldest forest which means it is hoven home for good number of birds over 350 bird species are recorded, including 23 endemics such as Short-tailed Warbler and Blue-headed Sunbird plus the seven IUCN red data listed species. Some of birds to see include African Emerald Cuckoo, Common Bulbul, African Blue and White-tailed Blue Flycatchers and Red-headed Bluebill among others.

Bird watching in Bwindi is best done along the main trails of Buhoma Waterfall Trail, bamboo zone and Mubwindi Swamp trail in Ruhija.

By Air

Travelers can fly from Entebbe while using Aero Link Uganda for your charter or scheduled flight or Kajjansi Airfield to fly you to the modern tarmac airstrip at Kisoro.

Bwindi is well served by three airfields at Kayonza, Kihihi for the northern sector and Nyakabande in Kisoro for the southern sector ‘’Nkuringo’’.
