Overall, Uganda experiences moderate temperatures throughout the year, around 22.8°C, with monthly temperatures ranging between 21.7°C (July) and 23.9°C (February). During this period, total annual average precipitation is 1,197 mm, and mean monthly precipitation of the country varies from 39.6 mm in January to 152.7 mm in April.

Below are some helpful hints to guide your packing list for a student’s tour in Uganda. When in doubt, leave it at home – in this case, “less is more”. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us.

First, let’s start with clothing. The weather in Uganda can vary, so it’s wise to bring layers. You should consider traveling with long-sleeved shirts, walking trousers, T-shirts, shorts, hats, and sunglasses.  Lightweight, breathable clothes are great for the daytime since it can get quite warm.

However, evenings can be cool, so consider packing a raincoat or sweaters to wear in air-conditioned restaurants and at the hotel. Don’t forget comfortable walking shoes, sandals, and strong waterproof hiking boots.

Hiking boots are important for gorilla trekking, chimpanzee tracking, and mountain hiking. Also, pack a pair of sandals for when you’re relaxing after a long day of exploring.

Next on the list are personal care items. Basic toiletries such as toothpaste, toothbrushes, soap, conditioner, face wash, Moisturiser, Shaving cream, perfume, and shampoo will be important. Due to the nature of travel, including hand sanitizer and wet wipes can be very useful.

Remember to pack sunscreen to protect your skin from the strong sun and insect repellent to keep pesky bugs at bay. Whether it is a long trip or just a short vacation, it is typical for us ladies to want to look our best while feeling great and comfortable, so pack essential toiletries such as makeup, lotion for body and face, lip protector, hairstyling products, and skincare products among others.

Health and safety are paramount, especially when traveling abroad. Bring any necessary medications, along with a first aid kit that includes band-aids, antiseptic wipes, and any specific prescriptions.

It might also be helpful to have some over-the-counter medications for common ailments, like headaches or medication for stomach upsets or diarrhea, such as Pepto-Bismol or Kopectate.

For documentation, make sure to have your passport, student ID, and any visas if required, yellow fever vaccination certificate, and financial cards/ cash; it’s important to also consider other important items on a typical packing list when visiting Uganda.

It’s also important to keep a copy of important documents in case of loss. A travel insurance policy can provide peace of mind as well, so consider arranging that before your trip. Remember, credit cards are taken at most restaurants and shops, and ATMS will be available.

Remember, your accommodations, meals, and ground transportation will all be taken care of so the only items you should need cash for are souvenirs, alcoholic beverages, and gratuities. We also strongly recommend leaving copies of your credit cards and their emergency contact numbers at home in case any of your cards are lost while abroad.

When it comes to electronics, don’t forget to pack a fully charged phone, Laptops, iPads, and maybe a camera and binoculars to capture all the beautiful moments. A power bank can be a lifesaver on long travel days. If you’re bringing any gadgets, ensure you have the right chargers and adapters for Ugandan power outlets.

Food and snacks can also be an important part of your packing list. While you’ll likely enjoy local cuisine, it’s always a good idea to have some familiar snacks on hand, especially for long trips or hikes. Granola bars, nuts, or dried fruit can be nutritious and easy to carry.

Notebook and Pen as a student, you might want to keep a journal or take notes during your trip. Bring a notebook/writing journal and pens to capture your thoughts, experiences, and what you learn along the way.

Finally, remember to bring a reusable water bottle to stay hydrated, which is especially important in a warm climate. It’s also worth considering packing a journal or a book to jot down thoughts or experiences along the way.

NOTE: Tipping has become common practice and is very much appreciated for a job well done. We recommend budgeting for an average of USD 1 to USD 10 per student per day as a token of your appreciation for their guidance. You may have several guides and drivers during the course of the Study trip.

It’s worth considering potential modifications to this amount, particularly when accounting for your group size. If you would like to tip your hotel housekeeping staff, we recommend leaving between US $1 and US $2 per student per day on your pillow; however, it is totally at your discretion.

In summary, packing for a student tour in Uganda requires thoughtful consideration of clothing, personal care, health and safety, documentation, electronics, snacks, and hydration. By preparing thoroughly, students can focus on making memories and enjoying their adventure in this beautiful country
