What is the difference between a mountain gorilla habitat and a lion habitat? If you have had a safari in East Africa, or are planning to visit East Africa any of these days; you will surely know that the most popular animals that tourists seek after are the primate, that is the mountain gorillas and the kings of the jungle that is the lions.  And since they are the most sought after, people wonder, how come they cannot be in the same habitat. It makes it easier to see them and learn about them.

Well, these animals live in different habitats because of several reasons and in this article, we shall address some of the differences in the respective habitats to give you a feel of what to expect when you visit the animals.

There are reasons why the habitats are different and these include: –

  1. The nature of the animal: the gorillas are climbing animals and high-altitude animals well as the lions, a flat ground animal.
  2. Food: the animals live in habitats where they can easily get food not just a place.
  3. Safety: Also, all these animals will opt to stay in areas where they feel the safest from danger and predators

Generally, the habitats reflect on the animal’s unique adaptations and requirements to live a fulfilled life.

So, habitats

Mountain gorilla habitats are tropical rainforests, cloud forests, and montane forests with high altitudes. The forests have dense, lush vegetation with abundant foliage, including trees, shrubs, and vines. The high altitudes go upto 2,200-4,300 meters above sea level. Up there the climate and weather is cool, misty climate with moderate temperatures of about 10-20°C and high humidity.

The lions on the other hand live in savannas, grasslands, and open woodlands with scattered trees, bushes, grasses and shrubs. The temperatures in these areas are below 1,500 meters above sea level; meaning its warm dry climate with high temperatures (20-30°C and low humidity.

The major differences here being mountain gorillas live in dense forests as lions live in open, grassy savannah areas. Mountain gorillas live at higher elevations and lions lower-lying areas. The mountain gorillas can only survive in cooler, mistier climates and lions thrive in warmer, drier conditions. The gorillas are herbivores and will need lush vegetation for food and shelter, the lions on the other hand are carnivores requiring more open spaces for hunting and movement.

Lions are the majestic kings of the savannah; the males with distinctive manes and weighing with males 150-250 kg, females 120-180 kg. Mane: Male is a sign of masculinity and helps protect the neck of the lions during fights. Lions have a golden coat color with a long tail and tufted tail end. They live in prides of several females, their cubs, and one or more males. Females often do most of the hunting and cub-rearing the males protect the pride and their territories
