8 Days Rwanda Hiking Safari

Trekking to Dian Fossey’s tomb in Rwanda is one of the most popular after safari activities in Volcanoes national park, there’s a trail to her former research camp and tomb. The campsite is at an altitude of about 3000 meters and was abandoned during the Rwandan genocide in the 1990s. Though it is a bit ruined, they have reconstructed it for tourism. Here’s everything you need to know about Dian Fossey and visiting her tomb. Dian Fossey was a primatologist who loved animals right from the time she was a child. In later life, she met Doctor Louis Seymour Bazett Leakey who was impressed by her love for animals and sold her the idea of studying primates in Africa. She took up the challenge and specialized in mountain gorillas that were on the verge of extinction. Dian Fossey spent nearly 18 years studying the gorillas in Congo and Rwanda. She established the Karisoke Research Centre in between the two mountains Karisimbi and Bisoke in the year 1967. Thus, Dian Fossey was the first human to study and understand the complex behaviour of mountain gorillas including their body language, played with them and managed to win their acceptance. Mount Bisoke Trekking involves hiking to the summit of a Mount Bisoke, a dormant volcano in the Virunga Mountains reaching to 3,711m, with a pretty crater lake at the top, straddling the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo, it is one of eight prominent peaks in the area with fabulous views.

Nyungwe forest national park on the other hands is home to the endangered chimpanzees and 12 other species of primates. Trekking chimpanzees in Nyungwe forest is one of the most scenic experiences under the montane rainforest and walking on a canopy above the forest is an added beautiful experience.

The Black and white Colobus monkeys in Nyungwe forest are also known as Ruwenzori Colobus monkeys and are the biggest troop of the Monkeys in the park. Their number is estimated to range from 350-400 individuals and they are also the biggest troop of monkeys in the African countries.
